Volume & cooking converters
US customary volume measures are different from UK imperial measures. Fluid ounces measure volume, not mass. Choose an exact direction below, or open the universal converter for all compatible units.

Understanding volume & cooking
US customary versus imperial volume
A US fluid ounce measures volume, not the mass ounce. A US gallon is 3.785411784 liters; an imperial gallon is 4.54609 liters. Recipes and container labels must identify which convention is intended.
How to verify a conversion
A US cup is 1/16 of a US liquid gallon, while a US tablespoon is one-half US fluid ounce. Volume cannot be converted to mass without a material density.
